We’re grateful for the support of so many partners working across cinema and social justice, for the collaborations with the films and filmmakers we’ve supported, and for the advocacy of all who attended our events over this past year, together building a vibrant community of film lovers, creators, and changemakers.
Together, we’ve made real impact in building audiences for marginalised perspectives in cinema and steps towards our mission for gender equity in all film spaces.
To celebrate our shared achievements, we invite you to check out our Annual Report and reflect on what we’ve accomplished together.
Highlights of 2023/24
Data Monitoring: For the first six months of 2024 just 22% of UK releases were co-/directed, and 20% co-/written by women and non-binary filmmakers, marking a mere 1% increase on 2023, and what remains a real need for our interventions:
Our Slate: Audiences rated/recommended our 23 supported titles to 94%, which included 96% films by women, 4% films by non-binary people, 52% global majority filmmakers and 22% global south co/productions.
Impact: 250 events in 88 cinemas across the UK engaged new and existing audiences, 31% of whom were first timers to their local independent cinema.
Inclusion: We saw an increase to 45% Deaf/Disabled audiences (with 75% of our events being accessible), 37% LGBTQIA+ and 28% Black / Global Majority audiences, with 85% of those who usually feel ‘excluded’ at cinema events feeling ‘included’ with Reclaim The Frame.
Reach: Our film campaigns more broadly engaged 886,000 people, boosting box office, with our total reach growing to 50,000.
Training: Filmonomics, our flagship CPD programme, ran for an 8th edition, for a cohort of 18 diverse and UK wide filmmakers, with an approval rating of 100%.
Advocacy: Workshops, panels, round-tables and advice sessions for 1000+ film professionals took our mission to festivals and conferences across Europe.
Looking Ahead
International Women’s Day next year will mark the 20th anniversary of the inaugural Birds Eye View Film Festival, from which our UK-wide, year-round campaign evolved.
To be part of it, we’re open for entries for new short films from UK-based filmmakers, click here for more.
Please join our Team and Board of Trustees in saving the date - 7-9 March 2025 - as we prepare for a weekend long celebration of screening events and discussions at BFI Southbank and Regent Street Cinema that offer reflection, and look forward to a more equitable future in film.
Thank you for an incredible year! You can read the full annual report here.
