A recent dip in female-led theatrical releases in the UK - back to 2018 levels of 26% reminds us that our work is far from over; that we cannot be complacent.

Below you can read about the research we conduct into gender representation in film and the wider industry, tracking the release landscape to present an accurate picture of investment in films by filmmakers of marginalised genders.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle

Directed by Stacie Passon

Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson.

“The arrival of a cousin with ulterior motives threatens the claustrophobic and isolated world of two sisters and their uncle”.

Stacie Passon’s sophomore feature, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, stars Taissa Farmiga and Alexandra Daddario as sisters who, traumatized by a dark family legacy, challenge the presumptions of patriarchy.

Stacie Passon co-wrote and directed Shirley Jackson’s 1962 creepy story that centres on an isolated family, which has already lost four members to poisoning, that uses rituals and talismans to keep itself away from hostile townspeople. Into this scenario arrives a distant cousin, intent on maliciously securing the family’s fortune and whose arrival sets in motion the uncovering of family secrets.

This is the first screen adaptation of the story; it has previously been made into a stage play as well as a musical.

TWL seeks to fight sexism and ageism in film and TV – over 4 days, with 5 months of ongoing development support, 12 screenwriters from across ALL regions of the UK & Ireland will be mentored by some of the industry’s best writers and producers.

The virtual lab will be held 10-13 June with 5 months of post-lab mentorship and development. Submissions for the Lab are now open (closing 20 April), find out more HERE

BRITTANY RUNS A MARATHON

Based on the true story of Brittany O’Neill,  New Yorker Brittany Forgler Starring Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street, Rough Night & Inherent Vice) is everybody’s best friend ― except maybe her own. At 27, her hard-partying ways, chronic underemployment and toxic relationships are catching up with her, but when she stops by a new doctor’s office to try to score some Adderall, she gets slapped with a prescription she never wanted: Get healthy.

Too broke for a gym and too proud to ask for help, Brit is at a loss, until her seemingly together neighbour Catherine pushes her to lace up her Converse sneakers and run one sweaty block. The next day, she runs two. And soon, after finishing her first mile, she sets an almost unthinkable goal: running in the New York City Marathon.
