A recent dip in female-led theatrical releases in the UK - back to 2018 levels of 26% reminds us that our work is far from over; that we cannot be complacent.

Below you can read about the research we conduct into gender representation in film and the wider industry, tracking the release landscape to present an accurate picture of investment in films by filmmakers of marginalised genders.

WILD ROSE

Written by award-winning writer Nicole Taylor (BAFTA for Best Writer for Three Girls and nominated for The C-Word), Wild Rose is a funny, sad, tender and uplifting story, starring Jessie Buckley in her breakout role.

SYNOPSIS

Diamond-in-the-rough Rose-Lynn Harlan (Jessie Buckley) is fresh out of prison and determined to make it as Country star. But her long suffering mother (Julie Walters), who has raised Rose-Lynn’s two children in her absence, thinks her dream is pie in the sky and demands she put family first. Forced to take a dead end job, she soon discovers a silver lining: her new employer (Sophie Okonedo) has become her biggest fan and wants to help her realise her ambition. With her self-belief restored, she begins to discover who she really is and that there is a different path to success.

Yoko Ono Lennon is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer, songwriter and peace activist. Her work also encompasses performance art, which she performs in both English and Japanese, and filmmaking.

In May 2017 after a 50 year ban the Royal Albert Hall opened its doors to Yoko Ono’s 1966 film Bottoms (or Film No. 4) which consists of nothing but close-up shots of 365 naked rears, walking away from the camera. Its “stars”, cast from an advert placed in an underground newspaper, included Richard Hamilton, the father of Pop Art, who designed the Beatles’ “White Album” cover.

Birds Eye View invited Devorah Baum to talk about the film and other philosophical fundamentals.

Devorah Baum is associate professor in English literature at the University of Southampton. She is the author of Feeling Jewish (A Book for Just About Anyone) and The Jewish Joke, and co-director of the documentary feature film The New Man.

“A powerful portrait of a cultural giant”

The Guardian

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am offers an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the legendary storytelling and Nobel prize-winner. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing too, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literatures and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works including novels “ The Bluest Eye”, “Sula” and “Song of Solomon”, her role as an editor of the iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.

In addition to Ms. Morrison, the film features interviews with Hilton Als, Angela Davis, Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley, Sonia Sanchez and Oprah Winfrey, who turned Morrison’s novel “Beloved” into a feature film. Using Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ elegant portrait-style interviews, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am includes original music by Kathryn Bostic, a specially created opening sequence by artist Mickalene Thomas, and evocative works by other contemporary African-American artists including Kara Walker, Rashid Johnson and Kerry James Marshall.
